## What is dsiEMVAndroid?

dsiEMVAndroid is an Android library that provides applications with the ability to process an EMV (chip card) electronic payment. More Specifically, dsiEMVAndroid is an Android .aar library that is compatible with most Android devices with an minimum API level of 23. dsiEMVAndroid is designed to communicate exclusively to Datacap’s NETePay Hosted™ platform, and doesn’t require an in-store NETePay application. Communication to NETePay Hosted uses the Android device’s IP stack, and all messages are encrypted for secure transmission over open networks (such as the Internet).

The dsiEMVAndroid control uses XML formatted requests and responses for transaction processing requests. For help getting started with dsiEMVAndroid, see Datacap’s [dsiEMVAndroid Demo app on GitHub](https://github.com/datacapsystems/dsiEMVAndroidDemo), or contact [Datacap Integration Support](mailto\:integrationsupport@dcap.com).

:::hint{type="info"}
dsiEMVAndroid enables support for semi-integrated [SureTap™ SoftPOS](docId\:om5Xi4PXEAFV2_Uu9GRVg). SureTap is Datacap's "bring-your-own-device" SoftPOS solution that turns NFC-enabled Android devices into secure payment acceptance tools, eliminating the need for dedicated hardware.

## How dsiEMVAndroid™ Works

dsiEMVAndroid is a library that is compiled directly into the POS application and runs on an Android device. Once the app calls into the dsiEMVAndroid control to start a transaction, dsiEMVAndroid takes over the payment flow: it connects directly to the paired EMV secure device over Bluetooth LE, USB, or IP, prompts the customer for payment, and captures and encrypts cardholder data at the device itself. dsiEMVAndroid then builds an XML-formatted request and sends it as an outgoing HTTPS request over the Android device's own IP stack directly to Datacap's NETePay Hosted™ platform. From there, the request is routed to a backend processor for authorization, and the response flows back through dsiEMVAndroid to the POS application.

dsiEMVAndroid supports two development models: [On-pad](docId:3wMoIpAXPrcpOV5j_2E8c) and [Off-pad](docId:_Hd5D2Lhrj0VulQbVM7j9). On-pad apps run directly on the Android payment device (e.g. a PAX or Ingenico Android terminal), sharing screen time with the device's own retail application (PXRetailer or UXR) to display card entry, PIN, and signature prompts, and communicating with it over a local loopback IP address. Off-pad apps run on a separate Android device, such as a phone or tablet, and dsiEMVAndroid communicates with an external, paired EMV secure device over Bluetooth LE, USB, or IP instead.

## What is dsiEMVX?

dsiEMVX is a Windows ActiveX control that provides applications with the ability to process an EMV (chip card) electronic payment in a multi-tiered client-server architecture. Applications integrated with dsiEMVX act as a client to Datacap’s U.S. EMV certified NETePay payment servers to process payments.

The dsiEMVX software is designed to communicate exclusively with Datacap’s in-store NETePay server products using Internet Protocol (IP). Messages exchanged between the dsiEMVX and the servers are encrypted for secure transmission over open networks (such as the Internet). This secure communications architecture provides the flexibility to configure systems using LAN and/or WAN networks.

Datacap servers are available for in-store or enterprise configurations and are designed to communicate with specific payment systems providers.

dsiEMVX does not use any storage on the client machine; the Datacap servers provide consolidated transaction data storage, logging and data management functions.

dsiEMVX directly controls an approved EMV PIN pad on a PC port (RS232 or USB Virtual COM port) or using over IP to manage all PIN pad interactions.

The dsiEMVX control uses XML formatted requests and responses for transaction processing requests.

## EMV Transactions and Operations Supported by dsiEMVUS

The following transaction codes (TranCodes) are supported in dsiEMVX

### Credit/Debit Transactions

| Parking IN/OUT | dsiEMVX PAX supports a method to uniquely identify a customer’s payment card, allowing the POS to determine when the customer is entering and exiting a parking lot or garage. Datacap’s control combines and hashes the unencrypted parts of the payment card, and provides them back to the POS as a base-64 encoded string. |
| Lodging | To help hotel POS systems, dsiEMVX supports lodging-specific operations. |
| Stored Credential On File | Ideal for situations of recurring payments and installment payments. By using COF, the merchant and POS avoid storing card data for recurring transactions, and maintain compliance with the card brands. |
| Custom Amount Format | On PAX Android devices, dsiEMVX supports the `<CustomAmountFormat>` field, which allows integrators to display a custom message to the cardholder on the "collect card data" form screen. |
| Custom Forms | dsiEMVX supports customs forms, so integrators can develop/design their own forms packages on PAX Android devices. |

[title] DSIEMVClientX®
[path] Datacap APIs overview/

:::hint{type="warning"}
DSIEMVClientX is a Canada only solution.
:::

DSIEMVClientX® is a Windows ActiveX control that provides applications with the ability to process an EMV (chip card) electronic payments in a multi-tiered client-server architecture. Applications integrated with DSIEMVClientX act as a client to Datacap’s EMV certified payment servers to process payments.

The DSIEMVClientX software is designed to communicate exclusively with Datacap’s in-store NETePay server products using Internet Protocol (IP). Messages exchanged between the DSIEMVClientX and the server are encrypted for secure transmission over open networks (such as the Internet). This secure communications architecture provides the flexibility to configure systems using LAN and/or WAN networks.

Datacap servers are available for in-store or enterprise configurations and are designed to communicate with specific payment systems providers.

DSIEMVClientX does not use any storage on the client machine; the Datacap servers provide consolidated transaction data storage, logging and data management functions.

DSIEMVClientX directly controls an approved EMV PIN pad via USB/Serial (recommended) or IP to manage all PIN pad interactions.

The DSIEMVClientX control uses XML formatted requests and responses for transaction processing requests.

## Differences between US and Canadian Integration

1. Support for Credit and Debit (Interac) is required.
2. Contactless transaction limit and CVM limit is $250.00 for all cards except JCB.
3. Contactless transaction limit and CVM limit is $100.00 for JCB.
4. Store and Forward (offline processing) is supported - credit only.
5. Cash Back is not allowed
6. SurchargeWithLookup is not supported
7. PaymentFee is not supported
8. EMVSaleWithSplit is not supported
9. SequenceNo value is returned by the processors in Canada. The SequenceNo value is tracked per terminal
10. Prompting for tip at time of sale is supported
11. Support for English and French languages
12. Additional XML Response tags are returned for receipt printing specific to merchant and customer language.
13. Receipt data is returned for merchant and customer copy

| **Tag**                     | **Description**                                                                                                                                                                                                        |
| --------------------------- | ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| `<ReceiptLanguage>` | **(String 6-7 chars)** Returns a value of French or English. This value is used by the POS to determine the language to be used to print the Merchant receipt header (“TRANSACTION RECORD” or “RELEVE DE TRANSACTION”) |
| `<CustomerReceiptLanguage>` | **(String 6-7 chars)** Returns a value of French or English. This value is used by the POS to determine the language to be used to print the Customer receipt header (“TRANSACTION RECORD” or “RELEVE DE TRANSACTION”) |
| `<ISORespCode>`             | **(Number 3 chars)** 3 digit response code from Canadian Host.                                                                                                                                                         |

Receipts
--------

For Canada, receipt data is returned for the merchant and customer copy. Two separate sets of receipt data are returned. The merchant receipt is returned in tags `<Line1>` to `<LineN>`. The customer receipt is returned in tags `<CustLine1>` to `<CustLineN>`. The merchant receipt is generated in the language of the merchant and corresponds with Merchant Language set as the PSCS parameter. The customer receipt is generated in the cardholder language. Before printing the receipt, the POS should still print the receipt header, merchant name, address, and phone number as separate lines at the top of the receipt.

## EMV Transactions and Operations Supported by DSIEMVClientX

The following transaction codes TranCode are supported in DSIEMVClientX

### Transactions

| **Operation**             | **Definition**                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                |
| ------------------------- | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| EMVPadReset | This command should be done before every transaction (Sale, VoidSale, Return, VoidReturn, VoiceAuth) to assure that no card is in the PIN pad chip reader before starting a transaction. If no card is in the reader, then a response should be returned with 2-3 seconds. If there’s a card in the reader, the PIN pad displays ‘Remove Card’ and waits for the card to be removed before returning a response; another EMVPadReset should then be issued. |
| EMVKeyChange | This command should be performed on demand from outside source OR when a pad is replaced OR new PIN pad installation |
| EMVParamDownload | This command loads essential parameter and security information into the EMV PIN pad. This command must be performed as requested by the payment service provider OR when a pad is replaced OR new PIN pad installation |

[title] Payment Links
[path] Datacap APIs overview/

## What are Payment Links?

Payment Links allow Datacap partners to accept payments without building an additional standalone website or application. Send Payment Links via SMS, e-mail or both.

## URLs

| **Type**      | **URL**                                |
| ------------- | -------------------------------------- |
| Certification | https\://paylink-cert.dcap.com/api/v1/ |
| Production    | https\://paylink.dcap.com/api/v1/      |

## Authorization

For Payment Links the authorization is the same as `V2` Pay API. which consists of Basic Authorization on all endpoints as `Authorization: Basic BASE64(eCommerceMID:ApiKey)` API Key acquired via the endpoint [`/AcquireInitialApiKey`](#) and rotated via the endpoint [`/AcquireApiKey`](#).

Refer to [Pay API Authorization](docId\:BTC4M25D3m2uHbaLHTJPx) for more info.

### Headers

Payment Links API only accepts JSON. The following headers are required.

```json
    headers: {
        'Content-Type': 'application/json',      // JSON is required
        'Authorization': `Basic ${encodedAuth}`, // Basic authentication
        'Accept': 'application/json',            // JSON accepted back
    },
```

### Creating a Payment Link

A payment link POST request consists of 6 objects:

1. `transactionProperties` will contain information about the transaction like amount, tip, and line items.
2. `displayProperties` contains properties that control the look and feel of the resulting payment page.
3. `paymentTypesAllowed` enumerates different types of Datacap MIDs that will be used for the payment request.
4. `apiKeys` (optional) is used for integrators to bring their own SMS provider account (Twilio supported today).
5. `communicationMethods` (optional) enumerates through different ways to automatically send the payment link to the customer (email,SMS).
6. `webhookEndpoints` (optional) will contain webhook urls and desired webhook events to be returned to the webhook page.

[title] Virtual Gift
[path] Datacap APIs overview/

## What is Virtual Gift?

Virtual Gift API enables merchants to create persistent gift card storefronts. The web pages remain active and can be used by multiple customers over time. Unlike single-use payment requests, gift card pages are designed to be permanent points of sale for virtual gift cards.

**Key Features**

1. Create branded gift card purchase pages
2. Support multiple payment methods (Credit/Debit, ACH) with Apple Pay and Google Pay support for card payments
3. Three delivery options: Email, SMS, or Print (for hand delivery)
4. Schedule gift card delivery for future dates
5. Customize occasions, amounts, and messaging
6. Embed as widgets/iframes in your own website
7. Receive webhook notifications on purchases

| Certification | `https://paylink-cert.dcap.com/api/v1/giftcard` |
| Production    | `https://paylink.dcap.com/api/v1/giftcard`      |

## Authorization

The authorization is the same as `V2` Pay API. which consists of Basic Authorization on all endpoints as `Authorization: Basic BASE64(eCommerceMID:ApiKey)` API Key acquired via the endpoint [`/AcquireInitialApiKey`](#) and rotated via the endpoint [`/AcquireApiKey`](#).
All Gift Card API requests require HTTP Basic Authentication using your Datacap merchant credentials. Refer to [Pay API Authorization](docId\:BTC4M25D3m2uHbaLHTJPx) for more info.

**Important Note:** The merchant must be authorized to issue gift cards. The Virtual Gift API validates this by performing a test transaction during page creation.

[title] dsiEMVApple™
[path] Datacap APIs overview/

## What is dsiEMVApple?

dsiEMVApple is an Apple framework that provides POS applications with the ability to process an EMV (chip card) electronic payment. dsiEMVApple is designed to communicate exclusively to Datacap’s NETePay Hosted™ platform, and doesn’t require an in-store NETePay application. Communication to NETePay Hosted uses the Apple device’s IP stack, and all messages are encrypted for secure transmission over open networks (such as the Internet).

dsiEMVApple does not use any transaction storage on the client device; logging and transaction management occur at the NETePay Hosted servers.

dsiEMVApple directly controls an approved EMV device over Bluetooth LE or IP to manage all card data interactions. See [dsiEMVApple Secure Devices](docId:8gbfrtlNvFMwYcV_IZLzm) for a list of supported EMV devices and communication interfaces.

The dsiEMVApple control uses XML formatted requests and responses for transaction processing requests. For help getting started with dsiEMVApple, see Datacap’s [dsiEMVApple Demo app on GitHub](https://github.com/datacapsystems/DSIEMVAppleDemo), or [contact Datacap Integration Support](mailto\:integrationsupport@dcap.com).

## Supported EMV PIN Pad Devices (SecureDevice)

| Custom Amount Format | On PAX Android devices, dsiEMVApple supports the `<CustomAmountFormat>` field, which allows integrators to display a custom message to the cardholder on the "collect card data" form screen. |
| Custom Forms | dsiEMVApple supports customs forms, so integrators can develop/design their own forms packages on PAX Android devices. |
| Parking IN/OUT | dsiEMVApple PAX Android devices support a method to uniquely identify a customer’s payment card, allowing the POS to determine when the customer is entering and exiting a parking lot or garage. Datacap’s control combines and hashes the unencrypted parts of the payment card, and provides them back to the POS as a base-64 encoded string. |
| Stored Credential On File | Ideal for situations of recurring payments and installment payments. By using COF, the merchant and POS avoid storing card data for recurring transactions, and maintain compliance with the card brands. |

## eCommerce Integration

A typical eCommerce integration with Datacap consists of the following:

- Client side tokenization utilizing one or more of our tokenization frameworks.
  - An `otu` (one-time-use) token is created that is good for 15 minutes.
- Payment processing utilizing one of our gateway platforms.
  - An Auth Only transaction is sent to validate the account information represented by the one-time-use token.
  - A card token is returned with any successful transaction and is good through the expiration date of the account it represents.

[title] DC Direct™
[path] Datacap APIs overview/

## What is DC Direct™?

DC Direct is a semi-integrated solution which embeds payments logic into (s) to facilitate a direct communication between the device and NETePay Hosted™. No Datacap hardware or software is necessary. The POS simply initiates a request through an HTTP or HTTPS POST and DC Direct captures customer cardholder data and securely sends it to Datacap's NETePay Hosted platform. DC Direct offers an optional Standalone non-integrated mode for use cases which require a Standalone payment terminal.

***

## How DC Direct™ Works

Once connected to the internet, the DC Direct device is ready to receive payment requests from the POS. The POS terminal communicates over the local, in-store network to the DC Direct device using an HTTP request. The DC Direct device prompts the customer for payment, collects cardholder data, and makes an outgoing HTTPS request to NETePay Hosted. From there, the request is routed to a backend processor for authorization, and the response flows back to the POS terminal.

DC Direct supports two communication methods: **Local** and **Server** POST. Local POST allows for local communication to DC Direct via HTTP POST with Store and Forward capabilities. Server POST allows for communication via HTTPS POST to our cloud environment.

***

## DC Direct Configuration

To configure DC Direct:

::::WorkflowBlock
:::WorkflowBlockItem
Connect PIN pad to data and power source using included cables *(varies by device model)*
:::

:::WorkflowBlockItem
Initiate DC Direct parameter download through PIN pad *(varies by device manufacturer)*
:::

:::WorkflowBlockItem
Identify PIN pad IP address using [Device Discovery](docId\:Czd73A3En6uXCt7AhJ58L) *(optional for local communication only)*
:::

:::WorkflowBlockItem
Process payments
:::
::::

For server communication to the pad it is important to note communication between the service and device is done on TCP port 5080, so any installations need to make sure that port is open in their firewall.

Refer to the [DC Direct set-up guide](https://datacapsystems.com/dc-direct-setup-guide) for PIN pad specific set-up instructions.

# Datacap APIs

Datacap is a hardware and processor-agnostic payments gateway and middleware provider: you integrate once, and your point of sale inherits our library of [certified devices](https://datacapsystems.com/compatible-devices) and backend [processors](https://datacapsystems.com/supported-features-processors). This section covers the payments APIs most partners start with: grouped by where the payment happens.

Each product page covers what the API does, how it works, supported functions and devices, and how to get access.

## In-store payments (card present)

### [DC Direct™](docId:053v0keBDovQvAWH3VXMi)

*Any POS platform · HTTP/HTTPS POST · no Datacap software in store*

A semi-integrated solution that embeds the payments logic in the payment device itself, so the device talks directly to NETePay Hosted™: your POS just sends an HTTP POST. DC Direct is available in both semi-integrated and standalone modes.

:::hint{type="warning"}
**Use it when** you want the lightest possible integration, no in-store Datacap hardware or software, and freedom to build in any language or OS that can make an HTTP request.
:::

****

### [dsiEMVAndroid™](docId\:ek-MRM-acsY9FX6zyMTlf)

*Android · .aar library (API level 23+) · cloud-connected*

An Android library that talks directly to NETePay Hosted™ over the device's own IP stack, with no in-store NETePay application required. Supports both on-pad apps (running on an Android terminal) and off-pad apps (running on a phone or tablet paired to an external EMV device over Bluetooth LE, USB, or IP).

:::hint{type="warning"}
**Use it when** you're building an Android POS app — on the terminal itself or on a separate device.
:::

### [SureTap™ SoftPOS](docId\:Qzo0GydCvfjnE_gus20e9)

*Android · NFC-enabled device, no dedicated hardware*

Datacap's bring-your-own-device SoftPOS solution turns an NFC-enabled Android device into a payment terminal, accepting Apple Pay®, Google Pay™, and contactless cards through the device's built-in NFC reader. Runs semi-integrated or standalone, and is available to test in our sandbox.

:::hint{type="warning"}
**Use it when** a merchant needs tap-to-pay acceptance without buying terminals.
:::

****

### [dsiEMVApple™](docId\:aTdwNAI86uFG45wkQxq3f)

*iOS / iPadOS · Apple framework · cloud-connected*

An Apple framework that connects directly to NETePay Hosted™ and controls an approved EMV device over Bluetooth LE or IP. No transaction storage on the device: logging and transaction management happen at NETePay Hosted.

:::hint{type="warning"}
**Use it when** you're building an iOS or iPadOS point of sale paired with an external EMV PIN pad.
:::

****

### [dsiEMVUS®](docId\:CjekrtOQETyjjzGeD82Xj)

*Windows · ActiveX control · in-store NETePay™ server · U.S.*

A Windows ActiveX control that lets your application act as a client to Datacap's U.S. EMV-certified NETePay servers in a multi-tiered client-server architecture.

:::hint{type="warning"}
**Use it when** you're integrating a Windows point of sale in the U.S. and running in-store or enterprise NETePay servers.
:::

****

### [DSIEMVClientX®](docId\:kaB9UI1nr_k4sCiK1c-Uc)

*Windows · ActiveX control · in-store NETePay™ server · Canada only*

The Canadian counterpart to dsiEMVUS: the same Windows client-server model, certified for Canadian processing.

:::hint{type="warning"}
**Use it when** you're deploying a Windows point of sale in Canada.

## Online and card-not-present payments

### [Pay API™](docId\:MYxerfFl_1yvSIa-1AorU)

*REST · JSON, XML, or form-encoded · any platform*

Datacap's RESTful payments API, built on standard HTTP methods and a resource-oriented design. Handles eCommerce credit, ACH, gift, and other card-not-present transactions.

:::hint{type="warning"}
**Use it when** you're building your own checkout or billing flow and want full control over the payment request.
:::

### [Hosted Payments Pages](docId\:k0Ql0U8bOXImqChXsJpyI)

*Hosted checkout · redirect, iframe, or QR code*

A Datacap-hosted, white-labeled payment page for web checkout. Payment data is handled entirely by Datacap's secure infrastructure, with support for credit/debit, ACH, and gift, plus webhook notifications when a payment completes.

:::hint{type="warning"}
**Use it when** you want a branded checkout on your site while keeping cardholder data — and PCI scope — out of your application.
:::

### [Payment Links](docId\:P3y-WaG8hRmItccDraeVp)

*Shareable link · SMS and email delivery*

Generate a payment link and send it by SMS, email, or both — no additional website or application to build.

:::hint{type="warning"}
**Use it when** you need invoicing, phone orders, or pay-by-text.
:::

***

## Gift (Datacap Gift™ Omnichannel Gift Card Platform)

### [Virtual Gift](docId:_S_R5s-puowlToU4RKT3R)

*Hosted storefront · embeddable widget*

Creates persistent, branded gift card storefronts that stay live for repeat purchases. Supports credit/debit and ACH with Apple Pay® and Google Pay™, three delivery options (email, SMS, or print), scheduled delivery, iframe embedding, and purchase webhooks.

:::hint{type="warning"}
**Use it when** a merchant wants an always-on page for selling gift cards online.

| ------------------------------------ | ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| 3D Secure (3DS) | A cardholder-authentication protocol for online card payments. The issuer verifies the shopper during checkout, which can shift fraud-chargeback liability away from the merchant. \[1] |
| 3D Secure 2 (3DS2) | The EMVCo-specified successor to the original 3D Secure. It passes richer transaction data to the issuer and supports flexible authentication methods, so more payments can be approved without an extra challenge step. \[1] |
| ACH | Automated Clearing House: the US electronic network that moves direct deposits and direct payments between bank accounts for consumers, businesses and governments, without cards, wires, checks or cash. \[2] |
| AES-CBC | A mode of the AES block cipher in which each plaintext block is combined with the previous ciphertext block before encryption, so identical plaintext blocks produce different ciphertext. Specified in NIST SP 800-38A. \[3] |
| AES-ECB | The simplest AES mode: each block is encrypted independently with the same key, so identical plaintext blocks yield identical ciphertext. Specified in NIST SP 800-38A and generally unsuited to data with repeating patterns. \[3] |
| AFT | Account Funding Transaction: a card transaction that moves money from a cardholder's account to fund another account, such as a wallet, rather than purchasing goods. |
| AI model | A software system trained on data to learn patterns, then used to make predictions, classify inputs or generate content. |
| asynchronous | Describes operations that don't happen in lockstep: one system starts a request and carries on, and the result arrives later on its own timeline. |
| authentication rate | The share of card payments for which 3D Secure authentication was attempted, out of all card payments. |

| authorized person | An individual with significant responsibility to control, manage or direct a business, such as an executive officer or senior manager. Often used as the 'control person' in onboarding and KYC. \[4] |

| Address verification system (AVS) | A fraud check that compares the billing address a customer gives with the address on file at the card issuer; the issuer returns a match code to the merchant. |

| Track 2 | Magnetic-stripe data format holding the card number (PAN), expiration date and issuer-defined data, used for in-person processing. |
| 2FA | Two-factor authentication: a security process that requires two different authentication factors, such as a password and a one-time code, to verify identity. |
| VAT | Value-added tax: a consumption tax charged at each stage of production and distribution, ultimately borne by the end consumer. |
| webhook | An automated HTTPS message sent from one system to another when an event occurs, usually carrying a JSON payload. |
| wire transfer | An electronic transfer of funds from one party's bank account to another's, also called a bank or credit transfer. |
| Convenience Fee | A fee charged for offering an additional or expedited payment channel, such as online or phone payments. It differs from a surcharge because it pays for the convenience, not for card-processing costs. |
| Payment Fee | A non-cash adjustment that lets merchants add a fee to an electronic payment. Part of Datacap's Payment Fee Suite, which covers surcharge with lookup, dual/multi-pricing, split fee funding and convenience fees. The fee and description appear on the receipt. |
| Dual/Multi-Pricing | Showing different prices for the same item depending on payment method, such as a lower cash price (cash discounting). Works best in-person where a device can display each price. |
| Surcharge | A fee a merchant adds to a card transaction to offset processing costs. Regulated by card networks and many states. |
| Omnichannel Payments | Payment acceptance that unifies online, mobile and in-store channels so customers and merchants get one consistent experience and view of payment data. |
| Tokenization | Replacing sensitive payment data, such as the PAN, with a surrogate token that has no exploitable value outside the issuing payment system. \[6] |
| Point-to-Point Encryption (P2PE) | Encryption that protects card data from the point of capture to the secure decryption environment, leaving it unreadable in between. PCI SSC lists validated P2PE solutions that reduce merchant PCI scope. \[17] |
| Near Field Communication (NFC) | A short-range wireless technology (a few centimeters) behind tap-to-pay, used in contactless cards and mobile wallets such as Apple Pay and Google Pay. \[18] |
| Batch Processing | Collecting transactions over a period, often a day, and submitting them together for settlement rather than one at a time. |
| Payment Gateway | Technology that relays transaction data between merchants and processors or card networks for authorization and settlement. |
| Independent Sales Organization (ISO) | A third party that partners with acquirers or processors to sell and support merchant accounts and payment services. |
| Hosted Payment Page (HPP) | A payment page hosted by a gateway or processor where customers enter card data, keeping the data off the merchant's own site and reducing PCI scope. |
| PIN Pad | A device that securely captures the cardholder's PIN and typically also reads chip and contactless cards. See also: |
| Acquiring Bank | A financial institution that processes card transactions for a merchant, maintains its merchant account and settles funds from issuers. |
| Payment Processor | A company that routes and processes transactions between merchants, card networks and banks, handling authorization, clearing and settlement. |

[title] Payment Integration FAQ for POS Developers
[path] /

Common questions from software developers adding card payments to point-of-sale, kiosk, and unattended applications, answered by [Datacap Systems](https://datacapsystems.com), a payments solutions provider for POS software companies since 1983.

This page covers architecture, device and processor compatibility, PCI scope, and platform capabilities. Full technical reference material like transaction definitions, request and response schemas, sample code, and certification guides lives in the Datacap [Dev Porta](https://dsidevportal.com/)[l](https://dsidevportal.com/), which is free to access with approved developer credentials.

# How do I add payment processing to my point-of-sale software?

There are three broad approaches. You can integrate directly to a payment processor, which means a separate certification and codebase for every processor you want to support. You can embed a single processor's SDK, which ties your product to that processor and its merchant pricing. Or you can integrate once to a payments middleware layer that abstracts the processor and the terminal behind one interface.

The middleware approach is what most established POS ISVs choose, because merchant demand for a specific processor is the thing you cannot control. Datacap provides that layer: one integration to your application, then processor and device selection becomes a deployment-time configuration rather than a development project.

Before you write code, scope which markets you serve: retail, restaurant, QSR/Fast-Casual, parking, lodging/hospitality, healthcare, grocery, unattended, ecommerce, entertainment, etc. and consider the architecture of your point of sale.

# What's the best payment middleware for a POS ISV in the US?

There is no single answer, but there is a checklist worth applying. Evaluate any payments gateway or middleware layer against:

- [ ] How many payment processors are supported
- [ ] How many models it supports across manufacturers and payment processors
- [ ] Whether it keeps your Point of Sale application out of PCI scope
- [ ] Whether it supports card-present and card-not-present through one integration
- [ ] What types of tokens are support (processor-agnostic gateway tokens, Network tokens, etc.)
- [ ] How are processor certifications handled (ideally the vendor holds the processor certifications so you do not have to)
- [ ] Can you deploy out-of-the-box processing via standalone solutions that can be configured to semi-integrated mode once development is complete

Datacap was built specifically for these use-cases: US and Canadian POS software companies, so they can support Point of Sale developer's merchants via a semi-integrated or standalone. That focus shows up in breadth of processor and device support and in semi-integrated architectures that keep cardholder data out of the POS application entirely.

# How can a POS provider support multiple payment processors with one integration?

You use an abstraction layer. Your application sends a normalized transaction request to a payment middleware component; the middleware translates that request into each processor's message format, manages the processor connection, and returns a normalized response. Your code path does not change when the processor changes.

In Datacap's architecture, the POS application integrates to a client component — a Windows control, a mobile library, or a REST API depending on platform — which communicates with a Datacap payment server. Processor selection happens in the merchant's deployment configuration, not in your source code. Datacap holds the processor certifications, so adding a processor to your supported list does not require a new development or certification cycle on your side.

That is the difference between supporting fifteen processors and certifying to fifteen processors.

# Which payment terminals work with Chase, TSYS, Fiserv, Global Payments, Heartland, Worldpay or Elavon?

Terminal () compatibility is set by the combination of device model, payment processor, and the integration method in between; not by the terminal manufacturer alone. A given may be supported on one processor and not another, and encryption options such as standard versus PCI-validated P2PE vary by pairing.

Datacap maintains support across [PAX](https://www.pax.us/), [Ingenico](https://ingenico.com/us-en), [Verifone](https://www.verifone.com/en-us), [ID TECH](https://idtechproducts.com/), [Touch Dynamic](https://www.touchdynamic.com/), and additional kiosk and tablet , mapped against North American processors including TSYS, Global Payments, Elavon, Heartland, Worldpay, Fiserv/First Data Rapid Connect, Chase, EVO, Moneris, and others.

Because Datacap holds the certifications for these pairings, the authoritative device-by-processor matrix is published and kept current rather than assembled from separate processor and manufacturer documentation.

# What is a semi-integrated payment solution and who provides one?

In a semi-integrated model, the Point of Sale (POS) application never touches cardholder data. The POS sends a transaction request including the amount, transaction type, reference information, etc to a or payment component, which then prompts the customer, captures and encrypts the card data, routes it to the payment processor through the payment gateway, and returns a response to the POS, along with a token when one is requested. Sensitive card data flows around the POS, not through it.

What semi-integration removes is the POS's handling of cardholder data, not its control of the checkout experience. The POS still sets the amount and flow and composes its own prompt sequence from non-payment .

Semi-integrated architectures are offered by payment gateway and middleware providers. Datacap provides them for Windows, Android, iOS, Linux, and cloud-based POS systems.

# How do I make my Point of Sale (POS) PCI compliant without handling card data?

The most reliable route is to design the application so it never receives cardholder data in the first place. If a payment component takes direct control of the card-entry device (MSR, PIN pad, contactless reader, or EMV terminal) and captures the account number, expiration date, CVV, and PIN outside your application, your POS software can generally be kept out of PCI scope.

Two design details matter as much as the architecture. First, when a device cannot read a card, manual entry should be handled in a window controlled by the payment component, not by a POS screen. Second, the client component should store nothing locally: transaction storage, logging, and data management belong on the payment server.

Datacap's client components are built on exactly this model, with options for PCI-validated P2PE available on selected devices.

# What's the best way to add EMV chip card support to a Windows POS application?

For a Windows POS, the practical path is a client-server design: a client component installed alongside your application on the workstation, communicating with an EMV-certified payment server. The client component takes direct control of an approved EMV , over a serial or USB virtual COM port, or over IP and manages the full EMV interaction, including the card-present prompts, kernel behavior, and encryption. Your application sends a transaction request and receives a result.

This matters because EMV certification is the expensive part. Certifying an EMV kernel and terminal application per device and per processor is a substantial, recurring effort. Using a component that sits in front of already-certified server and device combinations removes that work from your roadmap.

Datacap provides Windows components for both EMV and broader multi-tender processing, with automatic failover across redundant payment servers for high availability.

# Who provides white-label payment gateway technology for software companies?

White-label gateway technology lets a software company or Independent Sales Organization (ISO) present payments as part of its own product rather than sending merchants to a third-party brand. What varies between providers is how much is actually brandable and how much gateway work you inherit.

Datacap's white-labeled gateway () covers login and welcome screens, custom URLs, reporting dashboards, payment forms, device overlays and welcome screens, gift card platforms, payment links, and logos and colors. The stated value is brand ownership plus speed to market (going live without building a gateway or pursuing processor certifications yourself).

For a POS ISV, that means merchants see your brand from checkout through reporting, while processor connectivity, certification maintenance, and device support stay with Datacap.

# What does Datacap Systems do?

[Datacap Systems](https://datacapsystems.com/) (Datacap) is a payments gateway and payments middleware platform for point-of-sale software companies. Founded in 1983 in Montgomeryville, Pennsylvania and now headquartered in Chalfont, Pennsylvania, Datacap gives POS, kiosk, and unattended software developers a single integration that reaches a wide range of North American payment processors and dozens of payment terminals from leading .

Datacap does not sell POS software and is not a merchant acquirer. It provides the layer in between: client components and APIs on the developer side, certified processor connectivity on the back end, and the device support that connects the two. Datacap holds the processor and device certifications, so its ISV partners can offer merchants processor choice without certifying to each one.

# What is DC Direct and how does it work?

DC Direct is a semi-integrated solution which embeds payments logic into (s) to facilitate a direct communication between the device and NETePay Hosted™. No Datacap hardware or software is necessary. The POS simply initiates a request through an HTTP or HTTPS POST and DC Direct captures customer cardholder data and securely sends it to Datacap's NETePay Hosted platform. DC Direct offers an optional Standalone non-integrated mode for use cases which require a Standalone payment terminal.

DC Direct runs on PAX Android, Ingenico AXIUM, and PamiTV devices, and includes an optional Standalone mode for non-integrated use, toggleable on demand.
